Barbican Press

Barbican Press was founded in 2009 with a name that says something about its purpose: a barbican is a fortified place of refuge, and that is what the press offers to writers whose work burns too brightly or cuts too deep for mainstream publishing. Our commitment is to books that are genuinely important — globally significant in their ideas, their humanity, or their formal ambition — but that resist the easy accommodations mainstream publishers tend to demand. Editorial standards are uncompromising. Our list ranges widely, but the voices we are drawn to with increasing conviction are those rooted in working-class experience and queer lives. What unites our titles is a willingness to go into dark places, and the hard-won belief that light can be found there. We publish simultaneously in the UK and North America, where we are led by the sales team of Pubisherds Group West in Berkeley.

We are largely proactive, making our approaches. Most chance would be for a distinctive queer voice that comes with a clear sense of how a market can be reached in the UK and USA. Submit via email
