Ning Tie

Tie Ning, born in 1957, is a novelist and chair of the China Federation of Literary and Art Circles. She was the first female chair of the China Writers Association, a position she held from 2006 to 2024. A translation of her 2000 novel The Bathing Women was longlisted for the Man Asian Literary Prize. She has won numerous prestigious awards, including the Lu Xun Literary Prize and the Lao She Literary Prize.

Tie Ning is known for the exquisite and realistic way she renders everyday people, especially her female characters. The struggles and successes that they go through are universal in their nature.

She is credited with helping to modernise the China Writers Association, creating space for fellow authors to “pursue their literary ideals”. She has also brought much-needed diversity to its membership, opening the door to more female and ethnic minority authors.
