The poems in Maria’s first full collection are accomplished, striking, often dissonant, but always deeply pleasing snapshots of life as an immigrant in the UK in the mid 2020s.

‘With impressive linguistic dexterity, Cohut finds fresh ways of exploring what it is to be a stranger in a strange land.’ Claire Booker

Maria Cohut

Maria Cohut is a Romanian writer living in Brighton with her ever-growing family of critters. Her writing is haunted by questions of identity, belonging, displacement, and what makes us human. It features in many online and print publications, including the Borders & Belonging anthology (Cephalopress, 2022), The Hellebore, The Other Side of Hope: Journeys in Refugee and Immigrant Literature, and The Madrid Review, and has also aired on the radio.

Her first poetry chapbook, Spatter Pattern (back room poetry, 2023), explored the issue of gender-based violence by reimagining detective fiction tropes. Her first full-length poetry collection, Multiple Exposures (Flight of the Dragonfly, 2026), reflects on the experience of becoming uprooted, writing in an adopted language, and healing fractured identities.

She blogs at encyclopaediavanitatum.org and can be found on Instagram, @mariac_phd
