The outrageous story of a gay man in 1980s Birmingham, who goes on to be Margaret Thatcher’s hairdresser… Longlisted for Polari Prize

Carl Stanley

Carl Stanley was born in Birmingham in 1969. A misfit from his first day at playgroup when he got into a fight with a girl over a frock from the dressing-up box, it was inevitable that he would become a New Romantic.

In the late `80s he moved to London to pursue his dream to be a make-up artist. Since then, Carl has worked on photo-shoots for publications such as Vogue, and Dazed & Confused, and with numerous celebrities including Helen Mirren, Jerry Hall and the late Margaret Thatcher.

He was totally devoted to night club madness from 1983 to 2008, but after 25 years of loyal service, having amassed a collection of 5000 CDs, he now prefers to party at home as the taxi fare is cheaper. As well as being a make-up artist, Carl mentors female prisoners at HM Prison Send where he is involved in the creative direction of the magazine ‘The Beauty’s On The Inside’. Kiss & Make Up is Carl Stanley’s first published book and is out now. NOW!
