Flowing in irrepressible odes and confessionals, Artichoke Heart materialises poet Sarah Clif’s dealings with grief, love, and womanhood with tender depth and thunderous release. Visualising emotion with the grandness and minuteness of the natural world, Clif projects a world where grief rolls like a mudslide, rage brews like a tempest, and embrace is a fruitful, blooming forest. Between aching verses and experiments with shape and sound, Artichoke Heart peels back the internal and external expectations of ideal womanhood layer-by-layer, embracing the spite, yearning and tenderness that exists in each person and makes us whole.
